Half of Salt Lake City's established plumbers are invisible when homeowners ask AI

We took 18 established Salt Lake City plumbing companies and asked Google's AI the questions a homeowner actually types. Then we wrote down which ones it named back.

50%of the 18 companies we checked were named in zero of 10 homeowner questions. Not ranked low. Left out of the answer entirely.

9 showed up in at least one answer. None were named in all 10. Valley Plumbing led at just 5 of 10, and the field drops off fast behind it.

This isn't us scoring everyone low to make a point. Some companies did get named. The story is who didn't, including Neerings, a 90-year-old shop with more than 2,000 reviews, which AI named in just 1 of 10 answers.

How we checked

We asked the way a homeowner asks

No tricks, and nothing you can't repeat yourself. We sent Google's AI (the Gemini model behind Google's AI answers) 10 real homeowner-style questions and recorded the companies it named back. A few of them:

A company counts as "invisible" if it was named in none of the 10 answers. Our list came from public Salt Lake City plumbing directories, so it skews toward established, well-reviewed companies. A random sample of every company in town would almost certainly look worse, not better.

Snapshot from June 2026. AI answers shift over time, so this is where things stood when we ran it, not a permanent verdict. This measures whether AI names a company, not the quality of its work, and we're not affiliated with any of these companies.

Who AI does name

A short, shifting list

Google's AI leaned on a small handful of names that moved with how the question was phrased. Just Right and Beehive came up most, and several names it returned, like Superior Water & Air and Drain Kingz, weren't on our list at all.

Valley Plumbing, Heating & Cooling5/10

Beehive Plumbing4/10
Millcreek Plumbing3/10
Western Heating, Air & Plumbing3/10
Superior Water & Air3/10

Drain Kingz2/10

That's the opening. Robert W. Speirs has been plumbing here since 1961 and was named in zero of 10; Neerings, in one. AI is willing to recommend Salt Lake plumbers. It just isn't naming most of them yet, and the ones it does name have a footprint it can read across the web.

Why it happens

It's usually not about being good. It's about being readable.

AI assistants name businesses whose websites spell out their services, the areas they serve, and homeowner questions in a form a machine can read, backed by steady reviews on the sources these tools trust. A company can have great plumbers and a five-star reputation and still get skipped, because the signals an AI relies on aren't on the page in a way it can use.

There's no ranking report and no traffic drop to warn you when this happens. The only way to know where you stand is to ask the AI the way your homeowners do.
